The Spirit of God in the Contemporary Church

Intro:

In our previous lesson we saw that miraculous gifts were confined to the first century church.  Some would say then that we do not believe in the Spirit.  Of some, this may even be true.  But we must understand properly His role today.

  1. The Spirit of God was given as an earnest.
    2 Cor 1:22; 2 Cor 5:5

  2. The Spirit dwells in us.
    1 Cor 3:16 (the church)
    1 Cor 6:19 (individually)
Question:

Does the Spirit dwell in me and, if so, what does that mean?

Scripture readings:

Romans 8:1-17, 26-28; Gal 5:1-6, 16-26

I. How do I know the Spirit is dwelling in me?

1. By what I do – Gal 5:16
A. Flesh – Gal 5:19-21
B. Spirit – Gal 5:22-23
2. By where my mind dwells – Rom 8:6-7
3. If I have vanity – Gal 5:26

II. What does it mean to me to have the Spirit dwelling in me?

1. Help with my infirmities – Romans 8:26
2. Sonship – Romans 8:14
3. Spirit as witness of that sonship – Romans 8:16
4. Heir of God with a guarantee of being glorified – Rom 8:17

Conclusion:

I do not need what is not offered.

I need not – therefore – I want not.
